Two Baldwin County School District Teachers Win 2023 Don Cargill STEM Scholar Award

On November 29th, Georgia Youth Science & Technology Centers (GYSTC) announced that two Baldwin County School District teachers, Mrs. Stephanie Coxwell of Midway Hills Academy and Mrs. Crystal Kennedy of Lakeview Primary (pictured above respectively), would be among the 2023 recipients of the Don Cargill STEM Scholar Awards.

The two teachers were among only 23 statewide recipients chosen for their creative use of imaginative classroom lessons that support science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. As part of this special recognition, the school district will receive a $500 grant for each awardee to be used toward the purchase of STEM education materials for their classroom.

Both awardees are set to be honored at a special recognition ceremony to be held at the State Capitol on January 31. They’ll meet with local legislators, visit both the House and Senate Chambers and hear congratulatory remarks from various leaders.

The Don Cargill STEM Scholar Award “recognizes teachers who are working hard to integrate effective STEM education into their classrooms,” according to GYSTC’s website. Lakeview Primary, where Kennedy teaches, has devoted its entire school to STEM education efforts as part of its 22’-23’ school year project, and Coxwell was recently awarded Teacher of the Year at Midway Hills Academy for her pioneering efforts towards promoting STEM.
