Oak Hill Middle School Theater Shines in Xanadu Jr. Performance

The spotlight was on Oak Hill Middle School last weekend as students lit up the stage with a vibrant production of Xanadu Jr. at the Baldwin High School Theatre. Performed on March 28 and 29, the musical drew crowds of enthusiastic families, friends, and community members. The show marked a major milestone as the first middle school production under the direction of Baldwin High School Theatre Teacher, Amy Zipperer, who described the experience as “wonderful” and a highlight of her first year in the Baldwin County School District.

A Baldwin County School Fine Arts Collaboration

What made Xanadu Jr. even more special was the powerful collaboration behind the scenes. Oak Hill Middle School Choir Teacher James Bell led music direction, while Dance Instructor Crystal Williams brought the choreography to life. Their efforts, combined with Zipperer’s leadership, created a fun, fast-paced show packed with color, laughter, and heart. The teamwork across schools reflects the Baldwin County School District’s strong commitment to supporting student creativity and building bridges between campuses.

Empowering Students Through the Arts

Zipperer emphasized the importance of fine arts in student success.

“Academic research supports that fine arts increases their success in other areas of their academic lives,” Zipperer explained. “It creates a connectedness with the school. It makes them want to come. It improves retention. And they make friends they’re going to have for their entire lives.”

The joy and camaraderie on stage during Xanadu Jr. proved exactly that, as young performers dazzled audiences and built lasting memories.

Building a Brighter Future for Baldwin County School District

Zipperer, who made a bold career move to join Baldwin High School this year, shared, “I was a little bit scared to make a career move at my age. But it has been a phenomenal payoff. Baldwin County School District really feels like home.” From her award-winning work on The Wonderful Wizard of Oz to this latest middle school triumph, her passion for student theater is already making a lasting impact. With continued investment in Baldwin County School Fine Arts programs, the future looks bright for student performers across the district.
