BHS Theater Presents 'Alice By Heart' April 25–26 at 7pm

The BHS Theater Department is preparing to transport audiences to a world of wonder, resilience, and imagination with its upcoming production of Alice By Heart, a musical set in a World War II-era underground shelter where young people retell the story of Alice in Wonderland to escape the chaos above.

Performances will take place at 7:00 PM on Friday, April 25th and Saturday, April 26th in the Baldwin High School Fine Arts Center. Tickets are just $10 and can be purchased online at baldwinfa.booktix.com or at the door with exact change.

A Story About the Power of Art in the Face of Adversity

Set in London in 1941 during the Blitz, Alice By Heart uses music, movement, and the magic of theater to explore how art becomes a lifeline during times of trauma. The musical blends scenes from Alice in Wonderland with the gritty reality of war, offering a moving tribute to human creativity and endurance.

“Art is a sustaining force,” said Amy Zipperer, Theater Teacher and Director of the BHS Theater production. “This show is about how imagination and performance can carry us through even the darkest of times.”

Student Talent Shines on Stage and Behind the Scenes

This year’s production is especially meaningful for Mercury Nelson, a senior at BHS and the show’s student choreographer. “Mercury has absolutely knocked it out of the park,” said Zipperer. “Her choreography adds so much heart to the performance.”

The production also showcases the technical design strengths of the BHS Theater Department, with a set that mirrors Zipperer's earlier Middle School production of Xanadu in its use of lighting and surreal backdrops. “I love creating a sense of theatrical otherworldliness,” said Zipperer. “These elements let audiences step into a space where imagination takes center stage.”

Baldwin County School District’s Commitment to Excellence in the Fine Arts

The production of Alice By Heart is another shining example of the Baldwin County School District’s commitment to Excellence in the Fine Arts. Through programs like BHS Theater, students are given real opportunities to grow as performers, directors, designers, and leaders.

“Our students aren't just memorizing lines—they're choreographing, building sets, and telling powerful stories,” said Zipperer. “The arts here are thriving, and our students are doing truly exceptional work.”
