Baldwin High School recently transformed its campus into a literary wonderland with the successful "Literary Feast," an event where English teachers brought literature to life through creative and delicious food pairings. The event not only celebrated reading but also highlighted the dedication of educators in the Baldwin County School System to fostering academic excellence.

"From ‘James and the Giant Peach Cobbler’ to ‘A Raisin in the Bun’ and ‘Life of Pie,’ our teachers truly embraced the theme with enthusiasm and creativity," said Baldwin High School’s Instructional Coach Amie Caruso. "It was amazing to see students and parents engaging with literature in such a fun and interactive way."

A Feast for the Mind and the Palate

The Baldwin Literary Night was a delightful mix of education and entertainment. Teachers prepared dishes inspired by famous literary works, adding a delicious twist to well-known book titles. Some even donated books related to their themed dishes, encouraging students to expand their reading horizons.

The mouthwatering menu included:

  • James and the Giant Peach Cobbler

  • An Alice in Wonderland-inspired tea party

  • Life of Pi and Zebra Cakes

  • Young Goodman Brownies

  • Don Qui-HO-HO-tes

  • Cookies from the Capitol (The Hunger Games)

  • Mary Poppins' Spoonful of Sugar Cookies

  • 1000 Splendid SunChips

  • The Raisin in the Bun

  • The Tragedy of Julius Caesar Salad

  • The Dos and Donuts of Love

Community Engagement and Literacy Resources

Mrs. Pam Longino, a key organizer, worked to secure grant funding to provide free books for students, reinforcing the school’s commitment to literacy. In addition, representatives from Central Georgia Technical College and staff from Twin Lakes Library attended the event, offering valuable information about their educational programs and community resources.

Parents had the opportunity to learn about both the current Georgia English Standards and upcoming curriculum changes. Baldwin High School also shared helpful literacy tools to assist families in supporting adolescent readers at home.

Bringing Literature to Life

Coordinated by Mrs. Jessica Thompson, the English Department Chair and Yearbook Sponsor, the event showcased the power of literature in uniting a community. "We wanted to create an experience where literature wasn’t just something students read, but something they could see, taste, and truly connect with," Thompson explained.

With engaging activities, free books, and a welcoming atmosphere, Baldwin Literary Night was a memorable celebration of reading, learning, and academic excellence in the Baldwin County School System. Events like these continue to inspire students to see literature in a new light while strengthening the bond between schools, families, and the broader community.
