On June 19, 2024, Baldwin County School Board offices as well as its schools and summer programs will be closed in Observance of the Juneteenth national holiday. We will resume a regular schedule on Thursday, June 20th.
Juneteenth commemorates the events on June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers, arriving in Galveston, Texas, delivered the news to those enslaved that the Civil War had ended, and they had been ordered free by President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation two and half years earlier. That year, the first celebration of Juneteenth, or Emancipation Day or Freedom Day, took place among the formerly enslaved people of Galveston.
Juneteenth is a powerful reminder of the importance of Freedom, equality, and the ongoing pursuit of Justice for all.
